MAGNAWAVE SUPPORT & EDUCATION
Frequently Asked. Questions.
Find answers to common questions about MagnaWave technology, certification, devices, training, memberships, support resources, and getting started with PEMF — all in one place designed to help you learn faster and move forward with confidence.

PEMF stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy. It uses brief, targeted bursts of electromagnetic energy to interact with the body’s natural electrical systems — supporting cellular function, circulation, and overall wellness from the inside out.

Every cell in the body functions like a battery. It holds an electrical charge, uses that charge to carry out its daily functions, and needs to be replenished over time. Stress, physical exertion, aging, and environmental factors can deplete that charge. PEMF acts like a charger — restoring the electrical potential of cells and supporting the body’s own ability to maintain and recover.

The result is a non-invasive, drug-free approach to wellness that works at the cellular level, reaching deep into tissue without needles, medication, or invasive procedures.

PEMF is not a new technology. It has been studied and used in clinical settings in Europe for more than 50 years, and research into the therapeutic effects of electromagnetic fields dates back even further. There are now thousands of published studies exploring PEMF’s effects on circulation, cellular function, tissue recovery, and more — many available through PubMed.gov.

MagnaWave was founded in Louisville, Kentucky in 2006 and has spent nearly two decades advancing PEMF technology for both animal and human wellness. Today, MagnaWave operates the largest network of certified PEMF practitioners in the world.

The body is fundamentally electromagnetic. The brain communicates through electrical signals. The heart beats on electrical impulses. Every individual cell maintains an electrical charge that is essential for it to function — absorbing nutrients, expelling waste, and communicating with surrounding tissue.

When a PEMF device is used, it generates a pulsing electromagnetic field that passes through the body — through skin, muscle, and bone — without any invasive contact. As the field passes through tissue, it induces tiny electrical currents at the cellular level. These currents encourage cells to restore their natural charge, improve their uptake of oxygen and nutrients, and release metabolic waste more effectively.

The field also has a bipolar, push-pull effect on ion flow across the cell membrane — supporting both inward and outward movement — which contributes to the overall improvement in cellular function.

No — and this is one of the most important distinctions to understand. The electromagnetic fields produced by PEMF devices operate at entirely different frequencies and wavelengths than the harmful EMFs associated with power lines, mobile phones, and other sources of electrosmog.

Harmful EMFs operate at very high frequencies — mobile phones, for example, emit electromagnetic radiation at 900–1800 MHz. PEMF machines, by contrast, operate at extremely low frequencies — typically well under 100 Hz — much closer to the earth’s own natural electromagnetic frequency (known as the Schumann Resonance, approximately 7.8 Hz). These low-frequency fields are non-ionizing, meaning they do not have enough energy to damage DNA or cells. PEMF has been used safely in clinical settings for decades worldwide.

No. While both use magnetic fields, the key difference is in delivery method, power, and penetration depth.

Static magnetic products — like magnetic blankets, wraps, or boots — produce a continuous, low-level magnetic field. They can provide mild surface-level support, but the field strength and depth of penetration are significantly limited.

MagnaWave PEMF machines produce a pulsing electromagnetic field — not a continuous one. The pulse creates a dynamic, changing field that penetrates far deeper into tissue, reaching muscle, bone, and organs that static devices simply cannot access. What a magnetic blanket might accomplish over several weeks of consistent use, a single MagnaWave session can support in minutes. The difference is not incremental — it is fundamental.

Shockwave therapy and PEMF are both used in animal and human wellness settings, but they work very differently.

Shockwave therapy delivers mechanical energy — pressure waves — to a very specific, small focal point on the body. It can be uncomfortable or even painful, often requires sedation in animals, and must be administered by a licensed veterinarian. Its reach is limited to the precise area being targeted.

MagnaWave PEMF is non-invasive and non-mechanical. The electromagnetic field covers a broad area — the entire body, if needed — without discomfort, sedation, or the need for a licensed veterinarian to administer. Animals routinely relax — and often fall into deep states of rest — during sessions. It can be used anywhere on the body, at any time, without the risks associated with shockwave procedures.

Laser therapy and PEMF both deliver energy to the body, but the delivery is fundamentally different.

A therapeutic laser has a very small focal area — typically less than an inch in diameter — and limited penetration depth. To treat a larger area, a practitioner must work across the body point by point, which makes full-body sessions impractical and time-consuming. Higher-powered lasers risk damaging surface cells if intensity is increased to achieve deeper penetration.

MagnaWave PEMF produces a field that surrounds and passes through the entire area being worked — muscle, bone, and soft tissue — without the limitation of a focal point. A full-body session on a large animal typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. No comparable full-body session is practical with laser therapy.

MagnaWave is the world’s leading PEMF company — founded in Louisville, Kentucky in 2006 by Pat and Debi Ziemer. We design and manufacture our own PEMF machines domestically, operate the largest certified PEMF practitioner network in the world, and are the only PEMF company with a dedicated education and certification program — MPower.

Over the past twenty years, MagnaWave has become the trusted name in PEMF across equine, livestock, pet, and human wellness. Our machines have been used by 14 of the last 16 Kentucky Derby winners. We are proud sponsors of the American Bucking Bull, Inc. World Finals, the PBR Team Championship, and the World Equestrian Center.

We do not just sell machines. We train the people who use them, document the outcomes, and continuously advance the standard of what PEMF can accomplish.

Several things set MagnaWave apart — and none of them are small distinctions.

Power and quality: MagnaWave machines are IEC 60601 certified to medical-grade safety standards and manufactured in the United States. We offer the longest warranty in the industry — a 3-year manufacturer warranty extendable to 7 years at no additional cost.

Proven results: 14 of the last 16 Kentucky Derby winners have been prepared with MagnaWave. That record was not earned by a marketing department. It was earned in barns.

Education: Our MPower certification program is the only structured, cohort-based PEMF certification program in the industry, with animal and human tracks, required coursework, elective specializations, and continuing education. Competitors offer basic training videos. We offer a professional credential.

Community: MagnaWave has the largest certified practitioner network in the world — searchable by location through our practitioner map. When you buy a MagnaWave machine, you are joining a community with 20 years of shared knowledge behind it.

Try Before You Buy: We offer a 30-day trial program so you can experience MagnaWave in your own barn, clinic, or home before making a purchase decision. No other major PEMF manufacturer offers this at scale.

MagnaWave devices are wellness devices, not medical devices. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. For this reason, FDA medical device approval is not applicable to MagnaWave products as used for wellness purposes.

MagnaWave machines are IEC 60601 certified — the internationally recognized standard for the safety and performance of medical electrical equipment. This certification covers electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, mechanical safety, thermal safety, performance standards, and fire prevention.

MagnaWave machines are designed and manufactured in Louisville, Kentucky. We have built our machines in-house since 2017. This gives us direct control over quality, consistency, and the ability to continuously improve our designs based on feedback from practitioners and machine owners in the field.

PEMF is generally considered safe for both humans and animals when used as directed with a quality machine. It has been used safely in clinical and wellness settings worldwide for decades. PEMF is non-invasive, drug-free, and does not introduce any substances into the body.

As with any wellness modality, there are some important contraindications (see below), and we always recommend that new users begin at lower intensity settings and increase gradually. If you have any existing health conditions, consult your healthcare or veterinary professional before beginning PEMF sessions.

PEMF should not be used by individuals with implanted electronic devices, including:

  • Pacemakers or implantable defibrillators (ICDs)
  • Cochlear implants
  • Intrathecal pumps
  • Neurostimulators or spinal cord stimulators
  • Any other battery-operated or electronically controlled implant

The pulsing electromagnetic field can interfere with the function of these devices.

Additional contraindications to discuss with a qualified healthcare professional before using PEMF include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Active internal or external bleeding
  • Blood clots or deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Organ transplant recipients on immunosuppressive therapy
  • Recent surgery (consult your physician first)
  • Undiagnosed injury or illness

When in doubt, always consult your physician, veterinarian, or healthcare provider before beginning PEMF use.

Yes. In addition to the general contraindications above, the following situations warrant extra caution or consultation with a veterinarian before using PEMF on an animal:

  • Active or suspected colic (equine) — do not use until the condition is assessed
  • Pregnancy — consult your veterinarian
  • Active wounds, open lacerations, hematomas, or ulcers
  • Recent surgery — consult your veterinarian before treating the surgical site
  • Any undiagnosed injury or illness — PEMF is not a diagnostic tool; have the animal evaluated first

MagnaWave devices are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease in animals. Please consult with a veterinary professional for any animal health concerns.

Most users experience no adverse effects from PEMF. Some individuals — particularly those new to PEMF or beginning at higher intensity settings — may experience mild, temporary effects such as:

  • Slight fatigue following a session (the body is doing work at the cellular level)
  • Mild headache in some human users
  • Temporary increase in soreness in an area being worked (rare)

These effects are typically brief and resolve on their own. Starting at lower intensity settings and increasing gradually over time is the best way to minimize the likelihood of any transient effects. Drinking adequate water before and after sessions is also recommended to support the body’s natural recovery processes.

Non-electronic metal implants — such as pins, plates, screws, or joint replacements — are generally not considered a contraindication for PEMF use. The magnetic field interacts with the body’s electrical systems, not with inert metal structures.

However, we always recommend consulting with a healthcare provider before using PEMF on or near the site of any implant, particularly if it is a recent surgical implant or if the physician has specific guidance. The absolute contraindication is for electronically powered implants — pacemakers, cochlear implants, neurostimulators, and similar devices — not for passive metal hardware.

Yes. PEMF is generally considered complementary to most other wellness modalities and is safe to combine with other approaches to animal or human care. Many MagnaWave practitioners and machine owners use PEMF alongside massage, chiropractic care, acupuncture, physical therapy, and other modalities.

For animals under active veterinary care, always consult your veterinarian before incorporating PEMF alongside other treatments, particularly if the animal is recovering from surgery or managing an acute condition.

Session length varies depending on the animal, the area being addressed, and the goals of the session.

For large animals (horses, cattle, large livestock): A full-body session typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the machine, the attachments used, and the areas being worked.

For small animals (dogs, cats, small pets): Sessions typically take 20 to 45 minutes for a full-body session, and shorter for targeted work.

For humans (via AuraWell): Sessions typically range from 5 to 30 minutes depending on the device and the area being addressed.

One of the key advantages of high-powered MagnaWave machines is efficiency. What lower-powered machines accomplish over extended sessions, MagnaWave achieves in a fraction of the time.

Frequency depends on the individual, the animal, and the goals of the program. There is no one-size-fits-all protocol.

For performance animals in active training or competition, many practitioners and owners incorporate PEMF before and after sessions, events, and travel as a standard part of their routine.

For wellness maintenance, many owners and practitioners settle into a consistent schedule — several times per week — that supports ongoing cellular health.

For animals or individuals recovering from a specific physical challenge, more frequent sessions may be appropriate during the acute period, reducing over time as the animal or individual improves.

Your MagnaWave certified practitioner can help you determine the right protocol for your specific situation and goals.

Animals typically respond very positively to MagnaWave sessions. Most horses, dogs, and other animals relax visibly during sessions — dropping their heads, releasing tension in their muscles, and often entering a deep state of rest. It is common to see animals that were initially curious or cautious become calm within the first few minutes of a session.

The sensation is caused by the movement of ions across cell membranes as the electromagnetic field passes through the body. It is not painful. Animals do not need to be sedated, restrained, or medicated for MagnaWave sessions.

The visible response of the animal — the physical relaxation, the yawning, the chewing, the lowered head — is one of the reasons so many people who are initially skeptical become committed users after their first session. You can see it working.

Most people describe MagnaWave sessions as deeply relaxing. Many feel a gentle pulsing sensation in the area being worked — a physical reminder that the field is passing through the tissue. Some users experience warmth or a mild tingling. The experience is generally described as comfortable and restorative.

At higher intensity settings, the sensation is more pronounced — which is one of the reasons high-powered PEMF is preferred by serious practitioners. The sensation serves as direct feedback that the field is reaching the tissue.

Sessions are typically done seated or lying down, fully clothed, with the attachment placed on or near the area being worked. No preparation is required.

This varies by individual, by condition, and by the consistency of use. Some users — both human and animal — experience noticeable changes after a single session. Others see results build gradually over several sessions as the cumulative effects of regular PEMF use take hold.

PEMF is not a single-event treatment. It works best as part of a consistent routine — like exercise, nutrition, or sleep. The more consistently it is used, the more pronounced the results over time.

For performance animals, many trainers and owners report visible differences in how their animals move and recover within the first few sessions. For wellness maintenance, the effects are often described as cumulative — building over weeks and months of regular use.

MagnaWave has been used on virtually every type of animal imaginable. Our machines and certified practitioners work with:

  • Horses (thoroughbreds, warmbloods, quarter horses, draft breeds, ponies, mules, and donkeys)
  • Cattle (dairy cows, beef cattle, breeding stock)
  • Livestock (pigs, goats, sheep, alpacas, llamas)
  • Dogs of all sizes
  • Cats
  • Small and exotic animals
  • Poultry and birds
  • Wildlife in rehabilitation settings (through the MagnaCare program)

The same fundamental principles apply across species: electromagnetic field energy passes through living tissue, supports cellular function, and assists the body’s natural recovery processes. The machine settings, attachment selection, and session protocols are adjusted based on the size and species of the animal.

No. MagnaWave machines can be purchased and used by anyone — veterinarians, trainers, barn owners, practitioners, and individual animal owners alike. However, each state has its own regulations regarding the use of therapeutic modalities on animals, and it is your responsibility to understand the rules in your jurisdiction.

What is required — and what we take seriously — is training. Every MagnaWave machine purchase includes access to our MPower Essentials training program, which covers proper machine use, animal safety protocols, common applications, and contraindications. Full MPower certification is included with purchase and provides a deeper professional credential.

MagnaWave devices are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease in animals. For any animal health concern, consult a licensed veterinarian.

Veterinary regulations vary by state, and the rules around PEMF specifically are evolving as the modality grows. Some states explicitly address PEMF; others do not. As a general principle, PEMF used for general wellness purposes — not for the treatment of a specific medical condition — falls outside the scope of veterinary practice in most jurisdictions.

We recommend checking with your state veterinary board or consulting a veterinary professional familiar with your state’s regulations before offering PEMF as a paid service. MagnaWave certified practitioners are trained on regulatory awareness as part of the MPower program.

Yes — at the highest levels of the sport. MagnaWave has been used in the preparation of 14 of the last 16 Kentucky Derby winners. Our technology is used by trainers, riders, and owners across thoroughbred racing, show jumping, eventing, dressage, reining, cutting, polo, barrel racing, and virtually every other equine discipline.

MagnaWave is also a proud sponsor of the American Bucking Bull, Inc. World Finals, the PBR Team Championship, the World Equestrian Center, and the United States Equestrian Federation.

Yes — two MagnaWave machines are compliant with FEI Veterinary Regulations for use at FEI-sanctioned events. The Semi 10 and the Spiro Pulse both operate below the FEI’s electromagnetic field threshold of 0.1 Tesla (1,000 Gauss), which is the requirement under Article 1062 for Non-Restricted Supportive Therapies.

PEMF is classified by the FEI as a Non-Restricted Supportive Therapy — meaning it can be used by support personnel at FEI events without a Permitted Equine Therapist (PET) registration, and does not pose any risk under FEI anti-doping regulations. PEMF introduces no substances into the horse’s body.

For full details on FEI compliance, visit our dedicated FEI Compliance page at www.magnawavepemf.com/fei-compliant/.

MagnaWave should NOT be used on a horse displaying active symptoms of colic until the animal has been assessed by a veterinarian and the cause of the colic has been identified. Colic is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition, and it is essential that a veterinarian evaluate the horse before any supportive therapy is applied.

Once colic has been assessed and the veterinarian has cleared the horse, many practitioners incorporate PEMF as part of the post-colic recovery support protocol. Always follow your veterinarian’s guidance.

MagnaWave has been used in dairy and beef cattle operations for more than two decades. In a cooperative dairy field study, MagnaWave PEMF was used on cattle affected by acidosis and mastitis — two of the most costly conditions in commercial dairy. The results showed significantly reduced mortality rates in the treated population, and demonstrated a compelling case for incorporating PEMF into herd health programs.

For dairy producers, beef operations, and livestock veterinarians, MagnaWave offers a drug-free, withdrawal-free tool that fits the working schedule of a production facility. It supports circulation, gut health, and natural recovery — without pharmaceutical intervention.

Yes. While MagnaWave is best known for its animal wellness applications, our parent family of brands includes AuraWell — a dedicated human-focused PEMF brand offering portable, hands-free devices designed for everyday wellness, recovery, and relaxation.

The science behind PEMF is the same whether it is applied to a horse or a person. AuraWell brings that same trusted technology into a format designed for the human body and the demands of everyday life. Learn more at aurawell.com.

Yes, with the appropriate attachments. Many MagnaWave machines can be used on both humans and animals — simply by selecting the right attachment for the application. For those who want to certify in both animal and human PEMF application, MagnaWave’s MPower program offers both an Animal Track (through MagnaWave) and a Human Track (through AuraWell).

Anyone with the following conditions should consult their physician before beginning PEMF sessions:

  • Implanted electronic devices (pacemakers, cochlear implants, neurostimulators, ICDs)
  • Pregnancy
  • Active bleeding or blood clots
  • Recent surgery
  • Organ transplant on immunosuppressive therapy
  • Any serious or undiagnosed medical condition

If you are in good general health and using PEMF for general wellness purposes — energy, recovery, relaxation — most people can begin with low-intensity sessions without specific medical clearance. When in doubt, ask your doctor.

MagnaWave machines produce a sawtooth waveform — an electromagnetic pulse that rises sharply and falls gradually with each cycle. This waveform is produced with every pulse and is one of the characteristics that defines how the field interacts with tissue.

The field is also bipolar — it reverses polarity with each pulse, creating a push-pull action on ion flow that supports both inward and outward movement of ions through the cell membrane. This bidirectional effect is part of why MagnaWave is effective at supporting overall cellular function rather than simply stimulating in one direction.

Standard household and commercial electricity is AC (alternating current). When the power enters a MagnaWave machine, it is converted to DC (direct current). The DC current then travels to the attachment and is delivered into the body. This matters because the nervous system of animals and humans is also a DC system — meaning the current delivered by MagnaWave machines works in harmony with the body’s own electrical architecture.

Power matters because penetration matters. The electromagnetic field produced by a PEMF machine will pass through the body at both high and low intensities — but the charge that is stimulated in the tissue as the field passes through is significantly greater with a high-powered machine.

High-powered PEMF also produces a physical sensation that users can feel — a tangible indicator that the field is reaching the tissue. Low-powered machines often produce no perceptible sensation, which makes it difficult to know whether the field is penetrating effectively.

For performance animals, practitioners, and anyone using PEMF as part of a serious wellness program, high-powered PEMF delivers results in minutes that lower-powered devices may not achieve in weeks.

The Julian Duo is specifically designed for dual-channel use — it contains two independent machines in a single case and can treat two separate areas or two animals simultaneously. This makes it the machine of choice for busy practitioners, veterinarians, and operations that need to maximize throughput.

While technically other machines could be used on two animals in a single session, this is not recommended unless you are using the Julian Duo, which is purpose-built for this application.

The Julian, Julian Duo, and Maia Pro represent MagnaWave’s highest-powered machines, with intensity ratings and output specifications designed for performance animals, high-volume practitioner use, and demanding professional environments. The Julian Duo adds dual-channel capability, making it particularly efficient for operations treating multiple animals.
